SHARING THE SHOWS
The reason I have this carving as my picture is because it was in my primary field of vision as I was dancing to this livestream. My plans to see Widespread Panic and Phish in New York (the only bands I’ll travel outside of DC to see now) were postponed due to Omicron, so I’m hoping for two nice trips, one in April and another in July. And it’s a good thing too, because I caught the Omicron on the weekend I was slated to see WSP. Fortunately, my last two antigen tests came out negative, and I was cleared by DC’s Contact Tracing team to quit isolating. But it’s going to be a slow, gradual road back.
When Pete texted me about a free livestream from a Greensky Bluegrass show from Port Chester’s Capitol Theater (with the Infamous Stringdusters as the opener), I thought it would be a fun way to spend a Saturday night (I had been watching Netflix for the last three weekends and was growing bored). I had seen the Infamous Stringdusters with Maggie on New Year’s Eve 2020; ever since then, New Year’s Eve has been spent indoors (not that I mind, but I am hungry for some live music). I had never seen Greensky and from listening to them on Spotify, I still like the opener more. But I am planning to see the bands live at the Anthem in two weeks, so this livestream whet the appetite. Plus, it’s been nearly two months since my last live music experience. After some technical annoyances logging onto the link, I was able to get on. It was interesting seeing the live chat as the show was going on. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one with COVID, and a couple of people were upset the bands had to be restricted because of “governmental regulations.” Yeahhhhhh… After a 45-minute opener from the Stringdusters (which featured the Grateful Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias” and Pink Floyd’s “Fearless,” the site timed the setbreak, which is a nice feature of livestreaming. A nice thing about livestreams is that during setbreaks, I can “introvert.” Which I did to a new Married with Children DVD collection I had gotten. That show would never get aired today, and the humor could definitely be seen as offensive, but I just can’t help laughing at it. I did grow up with it, so… Greensky started at 9:32. I wasn’t familiar with too many of their songs before I started listening to them on Spotify, and Pete kept me informed of their latest album, Stress Dreams, which really seems to be aptly titled, given these last two years. When I listened to it, I fell in love with the opening track, “Absence of Reason.” And I dug most of their other songs. A guy named “funkcaptmax” posted the songs as they played, and I present them for you here: Set I: Worry For You, Leap Year, Absence of a Reason, New & Improved, Streetlight Stress Dreams, Fixin to Ruin*, Burn Them*, The Breakdown Set II: Reasons to Stay, Broke Mountain Breakdown, Give a Sh*t, Monument, Get Sad, Cut a Tooth, Screams, Grow Together, Run or Die E: What You Need *-Band was joined by Jeremy Garrett, the drummer for the Infamous Stringdusters. During the encore, the band indicated Guido, their tour manager, would be departing, and he joined them on percussion for the encore. Overall, it was nice being able to dance and spin around in my own apartment, even though I was fading during the second set, as I tend to do without caffeine. It was also fun pretending to be at the venue (right down to the post-show French toast I cooked, a la the NY diner), and I’ll look forward to seeing them IRL in two weeks. Hopefully, my fatigue will have subsided.
