SHARING THE SHOWS
I originally wasn’t going to write a blog for this because we were going to a movie and not an actual show, but I changed my mind after being transported back to 1991. Gary, Maggie, and I left from my place at around 4:30, at which point we began to grind through the rush hour/beach/vacation traffic in Hampton on our way to the annual Grateful Dead Meetup at the Movies, which is held on August 1, Jerry Garcia’s birthday.
After some food-court style Chinese cuisine, we headed over to the theater. After previews of a couple of must-sees (Rush’s Cinema Strangiatoand Blinded by the Light), the show started. Our holy trinity was the first group to start dancing, followed by a few others (we’re trendsetters, what can I say?). As the lights went down, I heard someone saying, “I got enough mushrooms for everyone!” LMAO. Maggie and Gary made their way to the floor on separate occasions; I decided to join them after the “Might as Well” first-set closer. As the show played, I felt like I was actually at Giants Stadium (now MetLife stadium), and I would have loved to see the Grateful Dead just once, but alas, I didn’t get into them until a few years after Jerry’s untimely demise. Another highlight included some drunk lady bumping into Maggie and asking me if I wanted to spin. I politely declined through my eyes and body language. During “Drums/Space,” I mediated on my life. While I recently got a promotion at my university, I know that tenure is a rarity. I’m going for it anyway, but if I don’t, the spirits may actually have a bigger plan for me, and I don’t know what that is. And I shouldn’t try to figure it out; I just need to stay in today. After the show, the mall’s main area, a separate building we had gone through to get to the theater, was closed, so we walked around buildings for what felt like about a half a mile before we got to the car. On the ride home, Maggie was talking about the Jimmy Buffet show playing at Farm Bureau this weekend, so I took out my phone and played my favorite song of his, “Math Sucks.” That song cracks me up every time, and since math and I didn’t get along in school, I’m inclined to agree with its message. We also stopped at a 7-11, where Maggie saw a doll that she thought looked like my cat Chester. Of course, I said, “Hellwooo, Chester,” and had Maggie take a picture of me with it. I’m glad I decided to write the blog. I’ll be doing the same for Cinema Strangiato.
